HTTP vs HTTPS performance

HTTP vs HTTPS Test: Actually, HTTPS is faster that HTTP and there are a lot of proves about this. Even, there is a new site called HTTPS vs HTTP which explain all this in detail.

Anyway, there are a lot of things you can do right now to make HTTPS even faster. There is an amazing resource from Ilya Grigorik called Is TLS Fast Yet? where he explained in detail all tricks you can do to make TLS faster.

Some of them are:

  • Use a modern version of OpenSSL in your web server
  • Use a modern Linux kernel version, preferably 4.1.x +
  • Use a CDN service like Cloudflare to reduce the cost of TCP and TLS Handshake
  • Use HTTP/2 in your web server
  • Review all recommendations in TLS Performance Checklist

BTW, follow the current development of TLS version 1.3 which introduced a lot of performance improvements. Check the spec here, and read these 3 resources from Tim Taubert and Cloudflare:
